The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville invites you to “Meet Me at the Museum: Saturday Explorations,” a free family-friendly science and nature program offered the third Saturday of every month. This month, the museum welcomes fiber artist and printmaker September Krueger who will present her program, “Drawing from Antiquity: Sketching with Reed Pens”  on Saturday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m. Participants will learn a bit about the history of drawing tools that have been used since ancient times and will make their own pen from bamboo. After gathering materials from nature, participants will practice illustration with the new drawing tools and some ink. All materials will be provided.

Krueger is a fiber artist and printmaker who explores storytelling and mythology in her work. Originally from Harrisburg, PA, her early interest in fashion led her to studies in Textile Design followed by work in a wearable art studio producing a line of women’s silk-screened clothing. She relocated to Wilmington, NC in 2004, and finds constant inspiration in the birds and plants that thrive in the south. She is the primary Art Instructor at Southeastern Community College, teaching a variety of studio and art history courses. September provides professional development in arts integration as an A+ fellow under the NC Arts Council, and she has provided artist residencies for schools in Wilmington, Lumberton, Raleigh, Duplin county and Kinston. She offers local fiber workshops for children and adults through the Museum School at the Cameron Art Museum and the Columbus County Arts Council, and regularly participates with the Big Print! Steamroller blockprinting events. Further, she has served as a Teaching Artist with Dreams of Wilmington and has provided visual arts workshops with the Southeast Center for Arts Integration.

Calling all ghosts and goblins! Whether you go spooky, fab or kooky, dress up in your most boo-tiful costume and join the fun for a howl’ing good time at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville Saturday, Oct. 26, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Enjoy spine-tingling experiments, creepy crafts, ghoulish games and more. Take a walk in quick sand, explore ghastly dry ice bubbles, smile silly at the fantastical photo corner, and if you dare, check out what’s behind the mystery door.

Get in the Halloween mood with the film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” based on the bestselling children’s novel by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter, an orphaned 11-year old boy, discovers that he is the son of two powerful wizards and possesses magical powers of his own. Upon acceptance to the prestigious Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry meets several friends who help him uncover the dark forces behind his parents’ mysterious deaths. Showtimes will be 10:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. This This 159-minute film is rated PG.

Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult over the age of 18. This Halloween special Science Cinema event is funded by a grant from the International Paper Foundation.
