Cerro Gordo native Raven Boone has joined The News Reporter as an intern in the newsroom. Her internship will include writing stories and columns, editing video and serving on the copy editing team. She has launched “CoCo happenings,” an feature previewing weekend events.

“Raven is off to a strong start and is already contributing a great deal to our team.” said Justin Smith, editor of The News Reporter. “Her talents and perspectives are positive additions to the newsroom.”

Boone, the daughter of Marion Davis and Frankye Boone-Newkirk, discovered a love for storytelling at a young age and could often be found creating articles for her own newspaper, The Raven Times, or writing story plots for her Barbie dolls to reenact during their weekly “television show.”

Boone is a 2012 graduate of West Columbus High School, where she took an active role in Viking life. She was a percussion player in the band, Junior Marshal and Beta Club member, Student Government Association reporter, and yearbook editor just to name a few positions.

She graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a BA in Communication Studies. She also holds an Associate in Broadcasting Production and Technology from Southeastern Community College. While in school, she wrote for UNCW’s student paper, The Seahawk, and was a video editor, director, and production assistant for UNCW’s student broadcast, TealTV. She has worked as an intern for multiple media outlets, including WWAY-TV in Wilmington and EDU-Cable in Whiteville. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

Boone has plans to attend graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill next fall with hopes of one day working as a television news producer. In the meantime, she is excited to be back in her hometown helping bring the stories of Columbus County and its residents to life.

In her free time, you can catch her with her nose in a book, checking places off her travel bucket list, or spending quality time with her favorite people, grandparents Franklin and Earnestine Boone and little sister, Jordan Newkirk.
