A six-hour search for an attempted breaking and entering suspect in the Cerro Gordo area resulted in his apprehension Monday night.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the incident started at 2:05 p.m. in the 3000 block of Blackwell Road when Daniel Graham Hayes attempted to break into a residence.

“When deputies arrived, Hayes fled by vehicle into a cornfield. When the vehicle got stuck in the field, Hayes fled on foot,” according to a CCSO Facebook post.

Two separate CCSO incident reports describe breaking and entering attempts at two residences while a third report notes the finding of syringes, amphetamines and other white pills.

CCSO says that K-9 and man-tracking units were on scene on Dolph Lewis Road, Blackwell Road and Cedar Grove.
