Exterminator charged with opiate theft

An exterminator has been arrested on charges he stole prescription opiates from Baldwin Woods Pharmacy in Whiteville.

Sheriff Lewis Hatcher said Friday that Antonio Donnell Mitchell, 27, of Tart Road, Clarkton, was jailed under $75,000 secured bond. His charges include felony larceny and four counts of trafficking in opiates.

The pharmacy contacted the sheriff’s office July 19 after discovering several discrepancies during in an inventory check, Hatcher said. Sheriff’s office narcotics officers discovered that Mitchell had ben in the pharmacy while performing his duties for his employer, and allegedly stole 700 Oxycodone tablets from the store.

Agents recovered most of the drugs discovered missing from the pharmacy.

Deputies located Mitchell in his pest control truck near the Bojangle’s in North Whiteville, where he was taken into custody. He had a quantity of pills packaged for resale on his person, according to the sheriff.

When officers searched Mitchell’s home, they found Oxycodone tablets in their original containers from Baldwin Woods. Detectives managed to recover most of the missing pills, valued at around $8,000.

Hatcher thanked the pharmacy for quickly contacting the sheriff’s office.

“Their actions and cooperation during this investigation were vital in keeping the stolen narcotics off of the streets,” Hatcher said.

The investigation is continuing.
