Evergreen robbery suspect makes brief escape on bike

An alleged armed robber who tried to make a getaway on a bicycle Sunday afternoon is in custody.

Christopher Brian Cliff, 39, was charged with a single count of felony robbery. he is being held under $10,000 secured bond, according to arrest reports.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies responded to 7531 Old 74, the Grocery and Grill Corner Store at Evergreen, in reference to an alarm call.

A clerk told deputies that a white male with short hair purchased a pack of chewing gum, and while the employee was putting the money  into the cash register, the suspect reached across the counter and removed approximately $220 from the register. The suspect left the store riding on a bicycle heading West on Old 74.

Deputies recognized the suspect on the surveillance footage, and tracked down Cliff on Monday at the intersection of Old 74 and Will Nance Road in Chadbourn.
