Two suspects were jailed Thursday morning after allegedly stealing from the Family Dollar in Cerro Gordo and threatening the cashier.
The suspects were taken into custody around noon, and the investigation is continuing.
No weapons were displayed in the robbery, and no injuries were reported.
Capt. Jason Soles of the sheriff’s office said the clerk at the store suspected the two black males of shoplifting, and confronted them as they were leaving the store without paying for several items. One of the suspects reportedly said he had a gun, Soles said. The clerk ran to call 911, and the two men fled.
One of the suspects was picked up in Fair Bluff, driving the vehicle described by the clerk. Deputies later picked up the second suspect at his home.
Charges are pending final interviews, Soles said.
“if we can charge them with robbery,” he said, “we will do so.”
Two suspects are still being sought for the Oct. 29 armed robbery of the Old Dock Dollar General. The robbers in that case shot at the surveillance system in the store. Responding deputies pursued them for several miles before the bandits, driving a BMW automobile, escaped. A deputy responding to that call sustained minor injuries when he wrecked his cruiser.
