Tuesday’s women’s basketball game between South Columbus and East Bladen has been postponed. The postponement is due to a lack of players on East Bladen’s part. According to NCHSAA protocol, “The team must postpone any scheduled contest during this quarantine period.” Bladen County Schools learned on January 8 that seven individuals associated with the basketball team have been identified as close contacts to a non-basketball team individual that has tested positive for COVID-19. Those individuals must quarantine for a period of up to 14 days.
East Bladen’s women’s games with East Columbus (Friday) and West Bladen (Jan. 19) will also not take place as originally scheduled. The three games affected are all non-conference contests.
South Columbus Athletic Director Russell Dove indicated an effort would be made to make up the East Bladen contest. East Columbus and West Bladen’s plans have not been announced.
East Bladen’s first conference games with Whiteville have been moved from Friday, Jan. 22 to Saturday, Jan. 23. The tripleheader will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the JV Boys contest. East Bladen is not fielding a JV Girls team this season.
This is the first instance of a contest involving a Three Rivers Conference school pausing activities due to COVID-19. All volleyball matches were played as scheduled, as was the first week of basketball.
