Events at science museum this weekend, rest of July

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville invites adults and children to the following events this month. The museum is located at 415 South Madison St., Whiteville.

Wednesday Storytime: weekly, 10-11 a.m.

Join us every Wednesday for an exciting story, a little singing, a lot of dancing and hands-on exploratory activities. Storytime is designed especially for children in pre-school to kindergarten, but all ages are welcome. No reservations required for this free program, except for groups larger than 10.

Movies on Madison: “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Friday, July 6, dusk

An intrepid explorer will stop at nothing to retrieve a religious relic from a band of Nazis seeking world domination in this 1981 classic tale of adventure. Dress in your favorite character’s outfit and bring a chair or blanket. Lawn opens at 6:00 p.m. This 115-minute film is rated PG. This is a free family-friendly event: no pets, coolers, alcohol or smoking permitted. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Visit our education table before the movie. This event is made possible by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville and the Columbus County Arts Council.

First Saturday Nature Explorations: Saturday, July 7, 10:30 a.m. – noon

Bring a pair of binoculars, a camera and a lot of excitement as we explore the natural beauty of our area. Through citizen science and exploratory activities, this month’s exploration will be at the Columbus County Wildlife Action Headquarters, Helms Preserve (543 Sunset Terrace, Whiteville). In case of inclement weather call the museum for possible cancellations. The Nature Explorations program is recommended for ages 8 and up, but all ages are welcome.

Nature Play Day: Friday, July 13, 10 a.m. – noon

This drop-in fun and interactive outdoor event celebrates nature through creative play. Come dressed for the weather and ready to get messy. The Nature PlaySpace is designed especially for children in pre-school to elementary school, but all ages are welcome.

Second Saturday Storytime: July 14, 10-11 a.m.

Join us the 2nd Saturday of each month for a special story and hands-on exploratory activity. Storytime is recommended for children in pre-school to kindergarten, but all ages are welcome. No reservations required for this free program, except for groups larger than 10.

Movies on Madison: “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Friday, July 20, dusk

Dress in your favorite character’s outfit and bring a chair or blanket. Lawn opens at 6 p.m. This 152-minute film is rated PG-13. This is a free family-friendly event: no pets, coolers, alcohol or smoking permitted. Refreshments will be available for purchases. Visit our education table before the film.

Meet Me at the Museum: Banding Hummingbirds: Saturday, July 21, 9 a.m.- noon

Join Wildlife Ecologist Susan Campbell for an up-close look at hummingbirds. You will learn how to properly record data, as well as handle, band and release hummingbirds. This program will take place entirely outdoors. Wear closed toed shoes and be prepared for the weather. A water bottle is recommended. This free program is for all ages. No registration required.                                          

Science Cinema: “Under the Sea” Saturday, July 28, 10 a.m., noon & 2 p.m.

Be transported to some of the most exotic and isolated undersea locations on Earth and experience face-to-face encounters with some of the most mysterious and stunning creatures of the sea. This free 40-minute film is rated G. After each showing, we extend the learning experience in fun and engaging ways. Drop by our education table to learn more. Science Cinema programming is funded by a grant from the International Paper Foundation. No registration required.
