Event Details

A special service will be held at the Columbus County Sheriff ’s Office May 24 honoring local officers who died in the line of duty. As in past years, the sheriff ’s office is seeking relatives of all officers who paid the ultimate price. Family members will be escorted and honored during the event. A total of 11 local men have died in the line of duty since 1909. In that year, Constable Jesse Simon Long was shot and killed in Fair Bluff. Others include Bradd Cribb (1923); Hoke B. Smith (1930); Harry Long (1959) Milford Hardwick (1971); Lennue Hammond (1976); Troy Sigmon (1978); Robert “Bob” Hinson (1991); Andy Nobles (a local man on the Charlotte Police Department who died in 1993); Franklin Perritte (1995) and Timothy “Shane” Miller (2004). The 6 p.m. service will be held in front of the office, at the memorial near the flagpoles. Relatives of fallen Columbus County Law Enforcement Officers are asked to contact Susan Lennon at 910-642-6551 if they plan to attend.
