The advertisement of the first night ball game in Whiteville on Oct. 13, 1947, turned out to be inaccurate. Inclement weather caused the baseball game between a barnstorming team consisting of at least a half dozen major league players and a local all-star team to be postponed. The new date was Oct. 24. On Oct. 23, Whiteville High played host to Tabor City in the first sports contest under the lights at Legion Stadium. Tabor City defeated the Wolfpack 21-7 in front of a crowd of 2,300 people.
