Welches Creek farmer Chris Batten examined a damaged stalk of tobacco following a golf ball-sized hail storm. Batten estimated that 25 of his 36 acres of tobacco received damage, some as much as 50 percent. Dime to quarter-sized hail was part of two storms across Columbus County that left some areas with as much as two inches of rain. One wreck was reported in the Old Dock area and power was off in Bolton and Lake Waccamaw for one hour.
