Unknown to most Columbus Countians because of its security, equipment and supplies for a 200-bed emergency hospital had been in storage in Tabor City by the Department of Civil Defense since the beginning of the cold ward. Federal and state authorities permitted Columbus County Director of Emergency Management Howard Stanley, center, to distribute the contents to local health agencies in June 1980. Those participating were volunteer rescue squads, the local chapter of the American Red Cross, Columbus County Hospital, and the health department. All drugs were removed and destroyed earlier by federal officers. Staff file photo by Elgie Clemmons
