The emergency shelter at Edgewood Elementary School in Whiteville has reached its capacity of 140. People in need are being redirected to the county’s other shelters at Guideway Elementary and East, South, and West Columbus high schools. Edgewood is the only shelter in Columbus County accommodating pets.

Louise Williams, who lives in an older mobile home near Chadbourn, evacuated to the Edgewood shelter Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m. She said a large number of people began streaming in around 5 p.m. Williams chose the Edgewood shelter because she could take her dogs.

“They’re my babies,” she said. “One is 12 and one is 13 years old. They’ve been with me for a long time.”

Since arriving at the shelter, Williams said she had been taking the dogs out about every two hours to feed and play with them.

“(I’m) just praying that everybody is safe and (there is) no major destruction,” she said.

Mable Bryant Cox of Tabor City went to the shelter yesterday with her mother, who is on oxygen.

“I didn’t want to get caught in the storm and not get her placed,” she said.

Cox said they drove to Edgewood because the South Columbus High School couldn’t accommodate her mother’s health issues. Cox and her mother used comforters and a pillow to make a pallet on the floor of Edgewood’s multipurpose room.

“(My mother) wanted to go back home,” Cox said. “But I wouldn’t let her go back. I told her we were kind of stuck.”
