Columbus County Supt. of Schools Alan Faulk surprised members of the county board of education at the end of a meeting Thursday morning by announcing he will retire from the post he has held for eight years at the end of September.

Faulk, 57, is a native of the Bug Hill community of Columbus County who has spent his entire career in education with the local county school system. He began work with the local school system in 1984.

He became superintendent in 2011 on the retirement of Dan Strickland. Before that, he was associate superintendent for five years. He was principal at Evergreen Elementary School for four years and assistant principal at South Columbus High for five years. Before moving into administration, he spent four years as a classroom teacher at East Columbus High and nine years at Hallsboro Junior and Senior High.

“Nothing happened that caused me to come to my decision,” he said Thursday. “There were no problems or anything like that. It was not an easy decision to make, but I just felt like it is the right time. I prayed about it and thought hard about it before reaching my decision.”

Faulk attended Southeastern Community College before attending UNC-Wilmington and Pembroke State University. He received his advanced EdS degree at East Carolina University.

Chairman Barbara Yates-Lockamy of the board of education had no comment other than to say, “We just learned of his decision this morning. He told us he had thought this through and is ready to retire, so we accepted his decision.”

This story was updated at 1 p.m. on 06.29.18 to reflect a correction. Faulk was principal at Evergreen Elementary School, not East Columbus High School.
