Five people were hurt in a fireworks explosion at Lake Waccamaw during the McNeill family’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display about 9:30 Wednesday night.

A video taken of the display shows an impressive fireworks array, then an explosion on a pier that lasted several seconds.

Lake Waccamaw Fire and Lake Waccamaw EMS units responded and reportedly transported four to the hospital.

A witness said the individuals jumped into lake, and that one appeared to have a possible broken arm. All had burns to varying degrees, the witness said, but none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. All the victims were up and walking.

Two of the victims refused transport to the hospital.

The explosion occurred during the McNeill family’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display about 9:30 Wednesday night.

Lake Waccamaw Fire Chief Jerry Gore said sparks from a large pyrotechnic device apparently landed in a box containing “a large amount of other fireworks”, and ignited the other devices. A video taken of the display shows an impressive fireworks array, then an explosion on a pier that lasted several seconds.

A witness said the individuals jumped into lake, and that one appeared to have a possible broken arm. All four had burns to varying degrees, the witness said, but none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. All the victims were up and walking.

Lake firefighters and EMS were called to the scene at 9:34 p.m. Gore said he was attending a gathering at a nearby pier, and rushed to the scene.

A number of firefighters and EMTs were at the McNeill’s pier when the explosion occurred, Gore said, and they immediately began assisting the injured.

“They got them out of the water and had them on the steps of the pier,” Gore said. “EMS arrived a few minutes later.”
