A second printing is in the works for a book on the early history and buildings of Chadbourn. The first printing of the publication, only recently made available, sold out in just two weeks.
The Historic Architecture of Chadbourn North Carolina was written and photographed by the late Dr. W. Franklin Ainsley, a distinguished professor of geography at UNC-Wilmington. The book was copyrighted by the Chadbourn Centennial Committee in 2004, six years before Ainsley died, but it was not published until last year under a renewed copyright and after additional editing and indexing by Amanda Regan Worley, former head librarian of the Columbus County Library.
Pre-print orders are being taken until July 31 for copies of the hard-cover, 164-page volume. The book sells for $20 and proceeds will go to the non-profit Chadbourn Centennial Committee for maintenance and upkeep of the historic Chadbourn Depot Museum.
The book contains 64 photographs and hand-drawn illustrations on Chadbourn and, while it includes much history of the development of the town and of the surrounding rural area, it focuses mainly on architecture and buildings.
Seeds for the eventual book were planted in 1982 when UNC-Wilmington and the N.C. Dept. of Natural Resources and Community Development conducted a survey of historical buildings in Chadbourn. As lead researcher for the project, Dr. Ainsley became the author of what eventually would become the book.
A local committee composed of Elaine Blake, Amanda Bible (now Amanda Worley), Virginia Harris, Sara Davis, Sue Bullard and Elizabeth Powell led the project in the early 1980s and Catherine Yates provided much historical information to the committee.
The survey team documented 105 buildings at least 75 years old inside the Chadbourn town limits and another 65 buildings outside of town limits but within Chadbourn Township. The sponsoring Chadbourn Centennial Committee included Ruby Spivey, Dr. Robert Yates, Mrs. E.C. Williams, Mrs. W.B. Williamson, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Blake, Elizabeth A. Powell, Sarah Davis, Mrs. Tucker Ward and Mrs. Robert Yates.
Following Dr. Ainsley’s death in 2010, Elaine Blake and Amanda Bible, now Amanda Worley, began exploring ways of publishing the survey. Their efforts required organization, photo identification, editing and fund-raising. The result was publication of the book. Although it carries a copyright date of 2017, copies were only made available this month and the publication quickly sold out.
Because the publication must be self-sustaining, only enough books to fill pre-publication orders will be published in the second printing, and all orders must be pre-paid. People interested in purchasing a book should mail an undated check payable to the Chadbourn Centennial Committee for $20 for each copy desired. Checks should be mailed to Elaine Blake, 688 Bella Coola Rd., Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450. Interested persons can call 910-646-4122 for more information.
The purchaser’s telephone number should be included with payment so they can be notified when books are available for pickup at either McArthur Supply or CresCom Bank in Chadbourn. If buyers desire to have books mailed to them instead of picking them up in person, an additional $6.70 charge per book must be included along with mailing instructions.
