Highway reopens after tanker crash–UPDATED

A truck driver walked away from an early morning tanker crash near Chadbourn.

The N.C. Highway Patrol reports that the driver of the rig apparently fell asleep at the wheel, crossed out of the westbound lane, and crashed in the median. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. at Mile Marker 236.

Chadbourn Fire and Rescue responded, and the firm that owns the tanker contacted Herr Environmental Cleanup to remove the spilled materials. Traffic was detoured from the westbound lane of U.S. 74 to U.S. 75, then back around to the four lane. Eastbound traffic was initially reopened to a single lane of traffic, and the entire highway was reopened around 10 a.m.

The tanker itself was a total loss, and the truck sustained major damage. Specialized wrecker and recovery vehicles were required to move the vehicle in pieces from the scene.

The crash is under investigation, and the driver’s name and employer were not immediately available.
