Roseland firefighter Casey Godwin walks past flames coming from the roof of a home on South Elm Street, Chadbourn, after he cut a vent with a chainsaw. The fire destroyed the home.

Chadbourn Police Chief Anthony Spivey said he and Sgt. J. Norris were dispatched to assist Chadbourn firefighters. Upon arrival, he said, heavy smoke was showing and a neighbor was “screaming” that one of the residents and a puppy were inside the burning home.

Although the police officers had no protective gear, Spivey said, they rushed for the door.

“We made entry,” Spivey said, “and when we got inside, we could see the fire was going toward the roof.”

The officers searched the home until it became too dangerous, then exited the building. The neighbor then told them she had confirmed the resident had left earlier.

Spivey and Norris then joined Chadbourn Chief Randy Guyton and other firefighters on the hoses until other firefighters arrived.

Norris eventually made contact with the resident, Spivey said, who said he had taken the puppy to the veterinarian before the fire.

“We were really concerned,” Spivey said.

Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Due to the hot weather, fire departments from Chadbourn, Roseland, North Whiteville, Evergreen, Brunswick, Whiteville, Fair Bluff, Tabor City and Williams were dispatched for water and manpower. The call came in around 8:15.
