The New Columbus Hotel was built in the early 1920s and torn down after a fire in the mid-1960s. This hotel stood on the northeast corner of Madison and Walter streets, where Buster Powell’s used car lot later stood. The present-day Underwood (Wells Oldsmobile) dealership building can be seen with the protruding yellow sign. This photo was made by Mabel Maultsby Prevatte in the mid-1950s. The building would later be painted an earth-tone green.
