Alleged gunman jailed

The suspect said to have shot a Whiteville man for sitting on a car has been arrested.

Malik Earl Wilder, 22, of Covington Lane, Whiteville, was arrested by polince late Wednesday and released on a $10,000 secured bond, according to jail reports. Wilder was charged with a single count of assault with a dealy weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Police were called to the Sawmill Apartments off Hay Street Monday afternoon to investigate a shots fired call. Around the same time, officers were summoned to Columbus Regional Hospital, where Darius Jones was seeking treatment for a gunshot wound.

Jones told police that Wilder and a juvenile approached him while Jones was sitting on a car that was not his at the complex. The juvenile is alleged to have punched Jones, at which time Wilder pulled a small handgun and shot Jones in the hip.

The juvenile, who was picked up at the complex, is also facing charges in the incident. Jones is listed in stable condition, according to Whiteville Police.
