Meta Ward was unharmed when the apartment beside hers caught fire early Saturday, but her best friend is still missing.

Smoky the cat disappeared when Ward and other neighbors were briefly evacuated during a fire that destroyed an end unit at the Leder Apartments on Clay Street. Chadbourn Police Officer Tavon Pierce, his wife and three children were unharmed, but the home was destroyed along with all their belongings.

Ward said her apartment sustained some smoke damage, but her main concern after her neighbors was her beloved cat. The medium long-haired black and white female  has white paws and a white ruff, and is described as “Friendly but skittish.” Smoky is thought to be in the area of Clay Street between Franklin and Madison.

Ward asked on social media that anyone finding the cat call her at 910.234.2724.
