Collision claims 13th life in county

An early morning crash Saturday two miles from Chadbourn claimed the life of a Southern Pines man, bringing the county’s highway death toll to 13 this year.

Trooper Bill Rogers of the Highway Patrol said Mikal Bacon was killed when the moving van he was driving collided with a Cherolvet sport utility in the eastbound lane of U.S. 74, then collided with a tree. The crash occurred shortly before 5 a.m.

The Chevrolet, owned by Michael Rice of Roxbury, Mass., was parked partially on the highway, the Patrol reported. Bacon died en route to the hospital.

Neither Rice nor a passenger from his vehicle were injured. Rogers said both were out of the vehicle when the panel truck sideswiped the SUV and went off the road, struck a ditch then overturned against a tree.

Rice was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
