Offices at the Columbus County Courthouse were closed this morning (Thursday) due to an apparent gas leak.
Clerk of Superior Court Jess Hill said he decided to shut down all operations and send the staff home due to the smell of gas in hallways, the boiler room and elsewhere.
“We had some problems a couple weeks ago, and we thought they were repaired,” he said. “When we came in this morning, one of the deputies noticed a strong gas smell in one of the hallways, and I decided to err on the side of caution.”
No court sessions were scheduled this week, Hill said, due to a judges conference.
County maintenance crews are at work on the problem today, Hill said, and the offices will reopen Friday.
