Florence shelters and closings

The only shelter that remains open is at the Whiteville Rec Center, Rec Center Drive in Whiteville.





Columbus Charter School: According to the school: “Since our fall break starts on September 24, 2018, we are going to stay closed this first break week. Our goal is to have all staff return on Monday, October 1, and all students return for school on Wednesday, October 3rd to use the second break week for classes so that we can start making up some of our missed days.”

Columbus County Schools: Closed for students Monday, Sept. 24, and Tuesday, Sept. 25. Classes resume Wednesday, Sept. 26, on 2-hour delay.

Columbus Christian Academy: There will be no school on Monday, September 24 or Tuesday, September 25. The school will operate on a 2 hour delay on Wednesday, September 26. Dismissal time on the 26 will be as usual: 2:30 for preschool, 2:45 for elementary, and 3:00 for middle and high school.

Southeastern Community College: The college will reopen to faculty and staff on Monday, September 24, 2018. There will be no classes or scheduled activities and the SCC Child Development Center will be closed on Monday, September 24 and Tuesday, September 25. Classes for all students will resume and the SCC Child Development Center will reopen on Wednesday, September 26.

Whiteville City Schools: Closed to students Monday, Sept. 24, and Tuesday, Sept. 25. The district said information regarding the rest of the week will be provided Monday.


Columbus County government offices: Will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Columbus County Courts: On Friday, Sept. 21, Clerk of Court Jess Hill announced: Superior Court for next week is cancelled. All jurors summoned for Sept. 24 do not have to report, the Superior Court session was cancelled. All District Court for Monday was cancelled but will resume as scheduled starting Tuesday. Child Support court planned for Wednesday has been cancelled



The Columbus County Farmers Market Farm to Table Dinner scheduled for Saturday, September 22 as been postponed.

The Wright family reunion in Tabor City has been postponed. See update in Friday’s paper.

The Columbus County Literacy Council’s Scrabble Challenge scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, has been cancelled.
