A juvenile has been charged and another suspect is being sought after a man was shot at the Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville Monday.
Whiteville Police reported that Darios Jones drove himself to Columbus Regional after he was shot once in the hip with a small caliber firearm around 2:45 p.m. Officers were first called to the apartment complex on Hay Street to investigate a shots fired call, but found no evidence of a shooting at the scene, Police Chief Jeff Rosier said in a statement.
While the officers were leaving the complex, the emergency room at CRHS contacted police about Jones. A detective returned to the complex while officers and another investigator went to the hospital.
Rosier said the preliminary investigation showed Darios was sitting on someone else’s car in the parking lot when he was approached by a juvenile and Malik Wilder, 22. An argument began between the three, and the juvenile punched Darios in the face. Wilder then allegedly drew a handgun and fired once, striking Jones in the hip. The suspects then fled the scene.
The juvenile was located at the scene by police. The victim’s vehicle was also seized by police. Warrants have been obtained for Wilder, Rosier said. Additional charges may be filed in the case, which is being investigated by Lt. Andre Jackson.
