A Clarkton area man was airlifted to New Hanover Regional after being struck by a car Friday on U.S. 701.

Trooper W.A. Richardson said Michael Bobb Jr., 55, apparently darted into traffic near the intersection of U.S. 701 and Inman Lake Road, just north of the Whiteville city limits. Bobb was crossing the northbound lane when he ran into the path of an automobile driven by Ashley Cartrette, 38, of Whiteville.

Bobb was transported with severe head trauma, according to officials. The incident occurred near Whiteville Country Club and the Dollar General store.

Cartrette could not avoid the crash, Richardson said.

“Charges are pending, but the driver was not at fault,” Richardson said.

Whiteville Rescue took the victim directly to a waiting helicopter at Columbus Regional for transport to New Hanover Regional.
