Mrs. Alice Gray Johnson, 93, went peacefully to live in heaven Tuesday July 26, 2016. A native of Kinston, Alice spent the last 10 years of her life with her son and daughter-in-law in Hope Mills. In 1989 after retirement, Alice received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. She went to local nursing homes, where she pampered ladies, delivered Meals on Wheels, and helped during natural disasters. She was very active in church, Red Hat Ladies, and the Senior Citizen Clubs. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Eva Gore of Tabor City; and husband, Felix F. Johnson of Kinston.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 29 at Southwood Memorial Christian Church in Kinston. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. (prior to the service) at the church. Entombment will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston. Edwards Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her son, Freddie Warters and wife, Frances; one granddaughter, Darlene Elmore and husband, Greg; three great-granddaughters, Alicia Stanley and husband, Steve, Whitney Askew and husband, Grant, Lana Warren and husband, Chris; two great-great-granddaughters, Emma Lane Elmore and Madison Warren; one great-great-grandson, Rhys Warren.
Alice is also survived by her brother, Tom Gore and wife, Virginia; and sister, Freda Fipps and husband, Norwood. In addition, Alice had numerous close friends that were just like family to her.
