Barbara Jean Young, 72, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Otto Young and Ruth Todd Young.
She was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church and was a member of Lake Waccamaw Fire & Rescue for 36 years where she had served as a former chief. She had also worked with Southeastern Community College as an Adult Education EMT Instructor from 2000-2011. In addition to her working years , she had worked with Todd Furniture Company for more than 15 years, Cape Fear Dupont, Wilmington, a dedicated member of Columbus County EMT with Buckhead Rescue Dept. and Columbus County EMT with Lake Waccamaw Rescue Dept.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at McKenzie Mortuary in Whiteville. Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at Hallsboro Baptist Church with Revs. Scott Lewis and Danny Williams officiating. Burial will be in Flynn Cemetery.
Survivors include her brother, Richard Young (Judy) of Whiteville; nephews, Ricky Young (Melissa) of Rockingham and Brandon Young (fiancée Valerie) of Hallsboro; a great-nephew, Brett Young; a great- Niece, Taylor Young; and a devoted caregiver, Candace Thompkins.
