Beatrice Holden Varnam, 91, died Monday, July 18, 2016 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center in Wilmington.
She was born in Brunswick County Sept. 24, 1924 the daughter of the late Richard B. Holden and Rushia Clemmons Holden. Following the death of her mother when she was a young child she was cared for by Willard and Callie Grissett.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Wesley Garland “Honey” Varnam; two sisters, Mamie Hewitt and Wilma O’Quinn, both of Wilmington; and one brother, Norman Holden of Charlotte.
She was a lifelong member of Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church. She was the organist, the church treasurer and secretary and treasurer of the ladies club.
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 20 at Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church with Revs. William Negron and Anthony Clemmons officiating.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Brown of Bolivia; three sons, Donald Varnam and Garland Nicholas Varnam, both of Supply, Ronald Varnam of Bolivia; two sisters, Dorothy Brown of Wilmington, Joyce Robinson of Varnamtown; two brothers, Lindbergh Holden of Whiteville and Robert Holden of Supply; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
