Catherine Isabel Connor Walters, 99, peacefully departed this life Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton.
She was born Oct. 2, 1916 to the late D.D. Connor and the late Ada Hammond Connor, the oldest of four siblings, two half-sisters and three half-brothers. She survived her brothers and went on to have a large family of her own.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Edwin Walters and continued to live in the home they shared, often surrounded by loved ones. Also preceding her in death was an infant son, George; one daughter, Jeanette Floyd; one son, Randolph Walters; and three brothers, Algie, J.D. and Fred Connor.
Known as “Mema” to all, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother. Praised for her cooking and her homemade biscuits, her hands have prepared and served countless meals, each and every one made and blessed in love.
She often said she became too emotional to publicly give her testimony in church, but her whole life was a living testament to her love of God, her abiding faith, her commitment to family and her service to others. She had such joy in people she loved and never met a stranger. She could comfort with a soft word or gentle touch and discipline with a single glance. She served her Lord faithfully for decades as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, in the W.M.U., the senior’s ministry, and as a prayer warrior. To her family and those who love her most, she was the epitome of scripture’s “Virtuous Woman” and they know she has already received her eternal blessing.
Final rites are planned at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14 at Barnesville Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. Pastor John Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Walter’s Family Cemetery on Creek Road in Orrum. A time of visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service. The family will also receive friends in the home.Floyd Funeral Services, 1549 Marion Stage Road in Fairmont is handling the arrangements.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sons, Lance Walters (Nancy) of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Eric Walters (Betty) of Orrum; daughters, Shirley Barbee of Effingham, S.C., Ada Ellis (Graham) of Fair Bluff, Linda Lawson (Tim) and Cathy Foley, all of Lumberton. She is also survived by 29 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved pet, “Dinky.”
