Charlie Maurice Martin, 74, went to be with his Lord Tuesday, June 12, 2017 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center in Whiteville. He was the son of the late Sudie Williamson and Charlie Langley Martin.
He was a graduate of Cerro Gordo High School (class of 1961) and a graduate of East Carolina University (class of 1965). Upon graduation Charlie pursued his career at Fayetteville Academy, 71st High School in Fayetteville, R.M. Wilson Jr. High School in Rocky Mount and the Columbus County School System primarily as a driver’s education teacher until his retirement.
Charlie was a devoted Christian and a very active member of Corinth Baptist Church serving as a Deacon, former Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendant and choir director in addition to many other capacities in the church.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 15 at the funeral home with Rev. Jeff Cully and Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Interment will be in Piney Forest Baptist Church Cemetery.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Gathel Williamson Martin of the home; stepsons, Tommy R. Barnes Jr. of Fair Bluff and J. Brent Barnes of Charlotte; one sister, Patricia Langley Martin Davis and her husband, Louis J. Davis, of Morehead City; three grandchildren, Garrett Isam Barnes, Noah John Williams Barnes and Zachary Ryan Barnes; a niece, Dr. Julianne Martin Davis of Greenville; a nephew, Louis J. Davis II of Morehead City; two great-nieces, Dylan Webb Davis, Lila Katherine Davis; and and one great-nephew, Luke Martin Davis-Christ.
