George William McRae

George William McRae, 72, went to be with his Lord Saturday June 30, 2018 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was the son of the late Emma Eloise Hammond McRae and William Leighton McRae and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Kenny McRae and Eddie McRae.
Mr. McRae was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and excelled in baseball holding the position of pitcher during his college career. He was an educator in the Columbus County Public School System and at the Boys & Girls Home of North Carolina at Lake Waccamaw for a total of 28 years and after retiring from the Columbus County Schools returning to the Boys & Girls Home to serve as the athletic director.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 2 at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at Chadbourn Baptist Church, of which he was a member for 46 years, with Revs. David Crumpler and C.F. McDowell III officiating. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Janice Peterson McRae of the home; two daughters, Kristina M. Shuffler and her husband, Brian, of West Chester, Pa., Georganna M. Fisher and her husband, Byron, of Whiteville; one son, Vance George McRae and his wife, Cheryl, of Nakina; one brother, Phillip McRae of Dunn; and seven grandchildren, Haleigh, Gavin, Alex, Will, Olivia, Caden and Brady.
Memorials may be made to Chadbourn Baptist Church, 504 Howard Street, Chadbourn, N.C. 28431.
