Harold F. “Harry” Layman, formerly of Lake Waccamaw, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022, at Village Care of King.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lula Alten Layman; two sisters, Edna Morrisette and Millie Walsh; his brother, Doug Layman; and his beloved fur companions, Katie and Molly.
He was born May 27, 1927, in Haines Falls, N.Y. and graduated high school in 1947 after serving his country proudly during World War II with a two-year stint in the U.S. Navy.
He graduated from N.C. State University in 1953 with a degree in Forest Management. His 35-year career as an industrial forester culminated with his appointment by North Carolina’s Governor to the position of State Forester. After six years he retired from this position and began writing his historical novel, “The Over Winterers.”
He was a member of Grace Moravian Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the John Walker Sunday school class.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Grace Moravian Church with visitation from 1:30 until 2 p.m. Burial will be private, with military honors, conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mt. Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. Moody Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
Surviving is his wife, Joan Layman of Mt. Airy; three sons, Matt (Kim) Layman of Belmont, Mark Layman of Palm Desert, Calif., Paul (Robin) Layman of Rutherfordton; one stepdaughter, Cathy (Dave) Lusk of Ararat, Va.; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Bill) Morrison of Lake Waccamaw; his first wife, Sara Layman of Cramerton; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
