John Wesley “J.W.” Burney Jr., 97, diedFriday, Feb. 9, 2018. Known as “June” and “Big Pa” he was born April 18, 1920 in Turnbull. He married the late Willie Hester Edwards Burney Dec. 7, 1944. He was preceeded in death by his parents, John Wesley Burney Sr. and Lucretia Fisher Burney; four brothers, Braxton Robert Burney Sr., Simon Alexander Burney, Rufus Anthony Burney and John Franklin Burney; and one sister, Saraetta Burney Peters.
He was a lifelong member of White Oak Church of God of Prophecy (now known as White Oak Family Worship Center).
He was owner and operator of Burney Logging and Chipping, which he built from “an old saw and a pickup.”
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16 at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Final rites will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 at White Oak Family Worship Center with Pastors Bill Tatum and Mackie Walters, Mrs. Lynn Warren and Rev. Amy Herring officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Wanda Burney Herring and Willie Jean “Jeannie” Burney; one sister, Pearl Luine Brisson of Fayetteville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Building Fund of White Oak Family Worship Center, 1944 Burney Road, White Oak, N.C. 28399.
