Lawrence Ray Bowers II

Lawrence Ray Bowers II, 74, died July 29, 2017 while recovering from heart surgery. Larry was a gregarious and energetic father and grandfather, and an active member and former Elder of Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, Ga.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Ray and Julia Vinson Bowers; and his sister, Julia “JuJu” Enderle.
Larry was born in Whiteville and grew up in the fields and mill ponds surrounding Columbus County. After graduating from Mercersburg Academy and St. Andrews College, he served as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineering in Alaska and Korea.

With an engineering degree from N.C. State, he worked in the agregate industry and finished his career as a VP of Operations at Florida Rock Industries, Inc. in Atlanta.
Larry spent much of his life in service of others, volunteering with the church  and helping folks in the community. Active in the Boy Scouts for many years, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received a Silver Beaver award for his work as a Scoutmaster in Troop 282 in Neptune Beach, Fla. He could often be found hiking in nature, running on the beach or canoeing on a river.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, Ga. with Dr. Jon Jacobs officiating.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lillie Tandy Bowers; his sons, Jess, Rusty and Andrew Bowers; his brother, E L. Vinson Bowers of North Carolina; his sister-in-law, Louise Young of Tennessee; his brothers-in-law, Joe Tandy of North Carolina and Jim Helm of Florida; his grandchildren, Stella, Charlie and Elsie Bowers; and many nephews and nieces who were dear to him.
