Robert LeRoy Bannerman, 97, a native of Whiteville, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at his home. He was born March 10, 1921, the son of Robert Quince Bannerman and Mary Elizabeth Boney Bannerman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Rita Hesketh Bannerman, whom he met in England while serving with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
An accomplished media writer/producer, he was an Indiana University professor emeritus in broadcast education and an author of both fiction and non-fiction books dealing with events he experienced during his lifetime, including the “Golden Age” of radio, WWII military events and the desegregation of the American South.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Whiteville at a future date.
He is survived by his son, Mark Andrew Bannerman and daughter-in-law, Mary Louise Bannerman, of Whiteville; and three grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Emily Bannerman.
Commemorative contributions may be made to the LeRoy Bannerman Scholarship in Innovative Audio, IU Foundation or to the First United Church in Bloomington, Ind.
