Ruby Cashwell Skipper, 95, died peacefully Friday, June 9, 2017. Ruby was born Aug. 9, 1921 in Bladen County. She was the youngest daughter of the late Paul and Sackie Cashwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; one son, Morris; one daughter, Ramona; one sister, Sallie McKeithan; and three brothers, Sonny, Bill and Clip Cashwell.
As a young person she was raised in the Abbottsburg community and enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing basketball. Ruby graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1939. While rearing her four children, she worked on the family farm raising tobacco, chickens and cattle and was well known as an accomplished seamstress. She also worked in a local cotton mill and nursing home. As an avid gardener, Ruby always planted a large vegetable garden that she shared generously with others. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with family and friends to many destinations including Hawaii, Aruba, Nova Scotia, Mexico, California and Colorado. As a lifelong member of the Abbottsburg Baptist Church, Ruby’s strongest belief in life was her steadfast faith in God. Even while suffering, she showed faith, hope and love to those around her.
Arrangements are in the care of Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14 (one hour prior to the service) at the funeral home with the service following at 11 a.m. with Rev. Greg Skipper officiating. Interment will be in the Cashwell Cemetery, Abbottsburg.
She is survived by two sons, Dean and wife, Shaw, and Walter and wife, Despy; five grandchildren, Susan, Greg, Kimberly, Edie and Rachel; six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
