Ruth Owens Lane, 96, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at her home. She was born June 17, 1925, in Columbus County, to the late Major Owens and Nora Duncan Owens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, G.P. Lane; one daughter, Judy Lane Gowen; one brother; Mark Owens; and a sister, Linda Leader.
Ruth was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church. She worked as a secretary for Border Belt Tobacco Research Station for more than 30 years.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Western Prong Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is serving the Lane family.
She is survived by one daughter, Donnie Lane Hooks Formyduval of Whiteville; six sisters, Doris Huestess, Joyce Crawford and Lillian Babson, all of Wilmington, Betty Purser and Anne Rotruck, both of Raleigh, Mildred Walter of Fort Mills, S.C.; two grandsons, John Hooks of Wilmington and Phillip Hooks of Ocean Isle Beach; two great-grandchildren, Kathryn Hooks and Drake Hooks, both of Wilmington.
