Columbus County edged Wolfpack Optimist 13-12 in Saturday morning’s AAA District 2 tournament opener at Harritan Field in Whiteville. Columbus County will face South Columbus Sunday at 4 p.m. South Columbus received an opening round bye in the five-team tournament.
Riegelwood’s 15-5 win over Bladen County earned it a second day bye. The team from the eastern end of Columbus County broke a five-all tie with 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away for the win. Riegelwood awaits the winter of Sunday’ s Columbus County/South Columbus clash.
Wolfpack Optimist and Bladen County play an elimination game at 6 p.m. Sunday.
In supplemental tournament action Friday night, Columbus County defeated Wolfpack Optimist and Elizabethtown defeated South Columbus. Saturday, Elizabethtown remained undefeated with a 14-4 win over Columbus County. Wolfpack Optimist ousted South Columbus.
Sunday’s sole supplemental contest is an elimination contest between Wolfpack Optimist and Columbus County at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to play Elizabethtown, needing to win twice to take the tournament crown.
