The Central Middle School Hornets capped off a successful volleyball campaign with the championship of the Nakina Middle Invitational Volleyball tournament. Central defeated Williams 2-0 to claim the championship. After dominating set one 25-6, the Aggies took the Hornets to the limit in set two before losing 26-24, giving Central the title.
In other final day action, Nakina edged Hallsboro 25-21, 26-24 for third place. Evergreen finished tourney play with a 2-1 record by defeated Acme-Delco 25-11, 25-6. Tabor City also had a successful week. The Eagles defeated Chadbourn 25-3, 25-10 to finish play at 3-1.
Columbus County A-League teams swept first round matches against its B-League counterparts, Monday. Tabor City opened play with a 25-13, 25-8 win over Chadbourn.
In the only match involving two A-league schools, Williams edged Tabor City in set one 28-26 before closing out the match with a 25-12 win in set two.
Nakina downed Acme-Delco 25-16, 25-10. Central dropped Evergreen by scores of 25-13, 25-12.
Monday’s final match went to a third set after Hallsboro and Cerro Gordo each won a set by a score of 25-13. Hallsboro advanced with a 15-6 win in the final set.
Tuesday, Tabor City topped Cerro Gordo 25-9, 25-17. Acme-Delco defeated Chadbourn 25-13, 25-14. Evergreen and Cerro Gordo played the closest match of the tournament with Evergreen winning 25-22, 25-27, 18-16.
The winner’s bracket saw Central stop Hallsboro 25-11, 25-9. Williams and rival Nakina needed a third set to determine a winner with Williams coming out on top 25-12, 22-25, 16-14.
