Columbus cops Sunday night win over SC

South Carolina scored first, but North Carolina scored the most as the North Carolina Dixie Debs representative from Columbus County took a 9-1 win over border rival South Carolina in winner’s bracket play. The win put Columbus County in another winner’s bracket game against a team coming off a bye, Louisiana. Louisiana has outscored its first two opponents 23-0.

Alexis Suggs pitched the first two innings for Columbus County, allowing one unearned run in the first. Lauren Smith pitched the final five frames. Combined they allowed three hits, one walk and struck out four batters.

In the top of the second, Lindsey Jones singled. Suggs sacrificed her to second. After Jones stole third, she scored on Kelsey Carroll’s ground out. Columbus County pulled ahead in the fourth. Morgan Nye singled, Hailey Sarvis doubled and both scored on Alex Chestnutt’s double to put Columbus ahead 3-1.

Columbus County broke the game open with a six-run seventh. Sarvis doubled, jogging home as Chestnutt followed with a home run to center. Lindsey Jones singled. Alexis Suggs walked. Extra base hits by Kelsey Carroll and Lauren Smith coupled with Paige Gore’s grounder put the North Carolina representative up 9-1.

Hailey Sarvis was 3 for 3. Alex Chestnutt was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Lindsey Jones had two hits as the #3,4 and 5 hitters for Columbus were a combined 7 for 9. Kelsey Carroll and Lauren Smith banged out an extra base hit each. Morgan Nye and Kailey Paul singled.
