Louisiana came into its contest with Columbus County unscored upon. After just five batters, Columbus County put three runs on the board. Alexis Suggs and Kailey Paul combined to limit Louisiana to just three hits and the offense tacked on single runs in the third, fourth and six innings for a 6-3 victory. Columbus County is the only remaining undefeated team in the tournament.
Morgan Nye singled with one gone in the top half of the first. Hailey Sarvis, Alex Chestnutt and Lindsey Jones followed with consecutive doubles for a 3-0 lead. A leadoff triple by Louisiana and a throwing error left Columbus County with a 3-1 lead after one inning. Suggs retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced. Paige Gore led of the Columbus third with a bunt single. Callie Sumner was safe at first as her grounder forced Gore at second. Jarvis’s second double of the game scored Sumner for a 4-1 advantage.
Suggs doubled in the fourth and was driven in by a Kelsey Carroll base hit to up the lead to 5-1. Sarvis completed a perfect evening at the plate with a solo home run to right field in the sixth. Louisiana used a base hit and a couple of Columbus misplays to pull within 6-3 heading into the seventh. Louisiana did get a runner on, but not in scoring position in its final at bat.
Sarvis was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run. Kelsey Carroll and Kailey Paul each connected for two hits. Alex Chestnutt doubled. Contributing singles were Morgan Nye, Alexis Suggs and Paige Gore.
Columbus County plays Tennessee at 8:30 p.m. EDT, Tuesday.
