Columbus County Debs upset host team with comeback

A solo home run with two outs in the top of the ninth by Lindsey Jones gave Columbus County a 6-5 come from behind win over the host Alexandria, LA team. Jones’ run gave the North Carolina representative its only lead of the game. The win put Columbus County in a third round winner’s bracket contest against South Carolina Sunday evening at 8:30 EDT. Columbus County 6 Alexandria, LA 5 (9 innings)

Three hits and two errors gave Alexandria a 2-0 lead in the second inning. An Amanda Watts single, Lauren Smith walk and Callie Sumner base hit plated two runs for Columbus in the top of the sixth to tie the score.

Alexandria responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Columbus County started the seventh with a bang. Hailey Sarvis doubled. Alex Chestnutt followed with a two-run homer to center field to cut the lead to 5-4. With two outs Kelsey Carroll doubled to keep Columbus County’s hopes alive. Kailey Paul, who pitched the first seven innings, helped herself with a RBI single, tying the game.

Sarvis and Chestnutt combined for an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Alexandria had the winning run on third in the eighth. Lauren Smith, in relief of Paul, bore down and held the potential winning run there.

Jones launched a 1-2 pitch over the fence to give Columbus County its first lead of the game in the ninth after two were out. The host team threatened again in the bottom of the ninth with the tying and winning runs reaching third and second with one out. Smith and the Columbus defense again wiggled out of the jam to claim the 6-5 victory.

Callie Sumner had three hits to lead Columbus County. Kelsey Carroll added a triple to her double. Kailey Paul allowed eight hits, three walks, hit two batters and struck out five while earning the complete game win.
