Wolfpack Optimist built an early 11-1 lead and held off a Columbus County comeback to take a 12-10 win in AAA District 2 play. The loss was Columbus County’s first in the tournament and forces a “winner-take-all” final Friday evening. The teams have played twice in the tournament with Columbus County winning 13-12 in opening round play and Wolfpack Optimist taking the 12-10 victory last night.
Judging from the previous results, tonight’s finale should be an exciting one.
Long time rivals Columbus County and Wolfpack (formerly Whiteville) Optimist are set to meet Thursday evening in DYB District 2 AAA championship action. Columbus County is undefeated. Wolfpack Optimist has battled its way through the elimination bracket after suffering a 13-12 loss to Columbus County in the tournament’s opening game.
Wednesday, Optimist eliminated Riegelwood 13-8. This game began minutes after the completion of Columbus County’s victory over Riegelwood. The CC/Riegelwood game was suspended in the sixth inning the previous (Tuesday) evening due to rain.
Undefeated Columbus County could have two bites at the “championship apple” if necessary. A Wolfpack Optimist win Thursday would force a winer-take-all game Friday.
Elizabethtown defeated Columbus County 8-0 to claim the Supplemental title. The squad from Bladen County outscored its opposition 36-7 in winning three consecutive games.
