A different suggestion for football playoffs

If anyone thinks there is a perfect way to select and seed NC high school sports playoff teams, I don’t think he/she has actually tried to do it. I believe the most important thing is to make sure as many “worthy” teams get in as possible. With the geography of North Carolina, travel is always going to be an issue.

Fielding Hammond did the research to come up with 2A and 2AA seedings based on a set of rules we decided on. Therefore we are calling this the “Fletch” proposal. Our rules and the seeding are below.

How a team qualifies.

#1) All conference champions are in, sole, co, tri, split conference.

#2) All teams with winning ( > .500) records are in.

#3) Remaining field of 64 is filled by teams with 4 or more wins and best MaxPreps ranking. If that does not fill out field then drop to 3 win teams. The 4 wins minimum kept Forest Hills (3-8) out of this plan. They are the 62nd team in using the NCHSAA guidelines.
#4) after 64 teams are selected, split into 32-32 by ADM, and then 16-16 by going East to West with longitude.

I realize this proposal has its flaws as well. The most notable is North Surry at 10-1 and a conference champion ( a full 2A conference , not a split) is on the road in the first round. Clinton is rewarded for losing 5 games to teams that finished 48-10, 3 of those losses by 6 or less points. There are some first round conference rematches.

Applied to the 4A/4AA, the Fletch proposal would not have kept South Caldwell out (1-10, MaxPreps ranking 75 out of 77 4A teams), but they would be a #16 seed and playing on the road in round one instead of a #2 with a first round bye.
