Columbus County Dixie Boys finish as state runners up

Town Creek in Brunswick County is the site of the 2017 Dixie Boys and Jr. Dixie Boys state tournaments. The Junior (13-year old) tournament is using a five-team round robin format. The Dixie Boys (14-year old) is an 11 team double elimination.

Wednesday finals.

Hope Mills American proved to be too stout for Columbus County taking a 19-2 win. Hope Mills finished the 11-team tournament undefeated. Columbus County’s runners up team members are AJ Jones, blake Strickland, Ethan Hinson, Jacob Allgood, Ashton Smith, Aaron Cartrette, Austin Booth, Bubba Mayo, Kevin Ezzell, JT Junious, Justin Connor, Jerome Beck and Jayquan Levine. The head coach is Scott Beck, assisted by Gary Smith and Brad Smith.

Tuesday play.

Columbus County shut out Sampson County 10-0 to make it to the finals of the Dixie Boys tournament. Hope Mills American defeated Kings Mountain to remain undefeated. Columbus County faced Hope Mills American Wednesday morning needing a win to force a winner take all second game Wednesday. Hope Mills American defeated Columbus County 14-2 earlier in the tournament.

Monday action.

Columbus County Dixie Boys continued to claw its way out of the losers bracket with two wins Monday. Monday morning Columbus County defeated North Granville 13-2. Monday evening Columbus County eliminated Bladen County by a 7-3 score. Columbus County is one of four teams remaining in the 11-team tournament. It faces Sampson County at 4:30 p.m. today. Hope Mills American is the lone remaining undefeated team.

The Columbus County Jr. Dixie Boys held a one-run lead entering the final inning against Duplin County. Two misplays and a double gave Duplin an 11-10 lead. Dublin retired Columbus in the final inning to claim the win. Columbus County ended round-robin play with a 1-3 record with two of the losses by one run. Brunswick County and Dallas will meet for the championship.

Weekend results.

The Columbus County Jr. team defeated Lee County 8-5 and lost to Brunswick County 4-3 on Saturday. Back on the field for its third game in a little more than 24 hours, Columbus County lost to Dallas 10-8. Columbus County Juniors play Duplin County today (Monday) at 4:30. Columbus County will not be in the championship game even with a win today. With a win today Columbus County would be 2-2. Dallas already has three wins and Brunswick County already has two wins and has a head to head win over Columbus County (first tiebreaker).

The Columbus County Boys opened play Saturday with a 16-1 win over Duplin County. Hope Mills American handed Columbus County a 14-2 loss Sunday night. Columbus County takes on North Granville Monday at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination contest.
