The only somewhat surprising result from Friday night’s action was Red Springs 43-35 win over East Bladen in girls basketball. Taya Jones had 25 points to lead the Red Devils to victory. Fairmont’s Kiara Page almost collected a quadruple double in the Golden Tornadoes girls’ 55-26 win over St. Pauls. Page had 20 points, 20 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals. Red Springs and Fairmont are now the only undefeated girls teams in TRC play.
Closer to home, Whiteville and West Columbus’ girls improved to 2-1 with wins over South Robeson and South Columbus respectively. Breanna McCellon scored 10 points to lead a balanced Wolfpack attack in its 40-28 win. Alex Bellamy contributed seven points with Marquasia Smith and Jazmin Faison adding six each. Ariana Jamison pulled down 10 rebounds. Tah’nijah McKoy scorched the nets for 20 points and Raeana Goodman added 14 points in the Vikings 51-37 win over the Stallions.Caila Turbeville led South Columbus with 19 points.
East Columbus rode a 29-point performance by Tia Campbell to its first TRC win, 45-33, over West Bladen.
A couple of firsts highlighted boys play. East Columbus nabbed its first TRC win, 71-60 over West Bladen. T.J. Barr continued his hot shooting for the Gators, scoring 24 points. Tyree Burney and Jordan McKoy added 16 each. West Columbus coach W. T. “Dub” Edwards collected his first win over younger brother Bryant’s South Columbus squad by a score of 61-50. The Vikings outscored South 20-8 in the final period to erase a 42-41 deficit after three quarters.
The Whiteville Wolfpack built a double-digit lead over South Robeson and then held on in the fourth quarter for a 55-53 win. Cameron Smith led Whiteville with 15 points.
Fairmont brought home a 77-61 road win at St. Pauls. Red Springs came within a point of doubling up East Bladen 77-39.
