Whiteville 1 West Columbus 0 (OT)
It took 81 plus minutes for a goal to be scored in Friday’s girls soccer match between Whiteville and West Columbus. A shot off the left foot of Olivia Smith into the side net in the second minute of the first overtime period proved to be the only score of the match, giving Whiteville a 1-0 victory. The teams continued to battle, as overtime is not sudden death, through 18 more minutes without another score.
Whiteville had the majority of scoring opportunities in the match, clanking three shots off the crossbar and also denied by the fine defensive work of Vikings’ keeper Willow Stackhouse.
Vikings coach Marc Edge described the match saying, “It was a hard-fought battle.” Edge continued, “My girls felt like it was a win. We have never taken Whiteville into overtime. If we play with this focus and effort every match, we have the ability to win anytime we play.”
South Columbus 3 West Bladen 2
Thursday, West Bladen scored the opening goal 15 minutes into the first half. South’s Madison Grigsby scored off of a rebound from her own shot to tie the score at one-all just before halftime. The goal was Grigsby’s first as a high school player. Sydney Pickell recorded two goals in the second half, one assisted by Kenya Andres and the other assisted by Grigsby to give the Stallions a 3-1 lead. West Bladen scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out with a minute remaining to make the score 3-2. Coach Andrew Rice said, “I was happy with the result, but felt that we got sloppy toward the end of the match. We still had a strong performance and continue to make strides in the right direction.”
Red Springs 2 East Columbus 0
Wendy Molina scored a goal in each half to lead the Red Devils to the win over East Columbus.
