The Hope MIlls Boosters broke through for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Whiteville Post 137 in American Legion baseball action Monday. The game was Post 137’s first with a full roster.
A walk to Dawson Elliott, single by A.J. Brooks and run-scoring single by Dylan Lawson gave Whiteville a 1-0 lead in the second. Post 137 starter Jeremiah Locklear did not allow a hit until the fifth. Hope Mills opened the fifth with consecutive singles, but stranded runners at second and third.
Gage Hammonds opened the Post 137 sixth with a double. Hope Mills starter Matthew Little kept Whiteville off the board with three consecutive strikeouts.
Locklear ran into more trouble in the sixth. A walk, single and walk loaded the bases. Reliever A.J. Brooks was greeted with consecutive RBI singles. A fielder’s choice increased the Boosters’ lead to 3-1.
Hope Mills reliever KyShawn McLean allowed a double to Owen McDowell in the seventh, but recorded three strikeouts to earn the save.
Brooks Baldwin had two hits for Whiteville. Locklear allowed three hits, three runs, struck out three, walked two and hit two batters.
Whiteville (0-1, 2-3) will host Goldsboro Post 215 in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Whiteville Post 137 home games are back at Legion Stadium in Whiteville after one year at West Columbus. Legion baseball games now consist of seven inning contests.
