Whiteville’s American Legion baseball team slipped by Wallace Post 256 3-2 to maintain first place in the Area II standings. The game was called in the top of the sixth inning when rain made the field unplayable.
Whiteville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Gage Hammonds drew a two-out walk. Hammonds stole second base before scoring the game’s first run on two wild pitches.
Scott Bowen led off the Post 137 second with a single. Owen McDowell beat out a bunt for a base hit. Will Hinson’s sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Brooks Baldwin walked to load the bases. A.J Brooks walked to force in Bowen. McDowell scored later on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Whiteville lead.
Jeremiah Locklear faced the minimum 12 batters through four innings. One Wallace runner reached base, but was erased attempting to steal third by catcher Scott Bowen.
Locklear ran into trouble in the fifth. A walk, single, throwing error and ground out plated two runs. Zac Hunt came on in relief. Hunt allowed two base hits, but recorded the final out of the inning on a line out to Hammonds at third base, preserving Whiteville’s 3-2 advantage.
Post 137 threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but did not score. Brooks Baldwin took the mound for Whiteville in the sixth. After Baldwin’s fourth pitch, play was called due to the rain. Having completed five innings the contest was final.
Jeremiah Locklear allowed two runs, two hits, struck out four and walked one. Jerry Locklear, Scott Bowen and Owen McDowell had hits for Whiteville.
Whiteville improves to 6-1 in Area II play and 11-4 overall. Wallace drops to 4-2 in league play.
